Sapele is an African hardwood that earns its premium with every glance — deep reddish-brown with an interlocking grain that produces a ribbon figure under certain lighting conditions that stops people mid-project. Luthiers use it for guitar backs and sides. Furniture makers use it when they want something that reads as exotic without being unobtainable.
These are face grain plugs, milled so the grain runs across the top of the plug the same way it runs through your surrounding material. The result is a flush installation that disappears into the wood — or announces itself beautifully, depending on the application.
I hand select every board before it gets cut. Sapele's interlocking grain means the ribbon figure isn't consistent across every board — I'm looking for the most pronounced figure and consistent reddish-brown color across the face.
