This is a property in the Rose City Park neighborhood of Portland that I’m privileged enough to be allowed the freedom to experiment. The first project I took on here was this curved fence. The old fence was a direct line between the garage and home so in order to maximize backyard space and also create something different that could be the basis for future exterior work, we decided to go with a curved fence. To create the effect I set a center post that could carry the lateral forces of the wood. To actually bend the wood it was a process not unlike building a skate ramp where the wood was kept wet and allowed to form into position. Once it took the new shape, the fence was sanded and stained. I’m looking forward to more exterior work on this property and building some curved planter boxes pulling off the fence to compliment its shape.
